Why screenshots are weak evidence

When a dispute lands, the instinct is to open dashboards and photograph whatever is on screen. That habit is understandable. As a primary evidence strategy, it has structural weaknesses.

They are late by definition

A screenshot taken after the dispute notice shows a state at capture time. It does not automatically prove what the buyer saw, clicked, or could access on the day of purchase. Admin UIs change. Logs rotate. Soft-deleted rows disappear. The merchant is arguing from a later vantage point.

Contemporaneous records - written when enrollment happened, when the link was issued, when the lesson opened - keep the original timestamps. Late uploads can still be useful, but they should be labeled as late rather than backdated.

They are easy to challenge as selective

A screenshot shows what the merchant chose to frame. It may omit neighboring rows, alternate accounts, or policy text that was live at checkout. Source-labeled exports from systems of record reduce that selectivity problem even when they are imperfect.

Integrity matters too. A record designed so alteration after the fact is detectable when checked against a preserved state is tamper-evident. A PNG of a dashboard is not.

They do not stitch the stack

Digital delivery spans checkout, payment, email, course or file hosts, and support. Five screenshots from five tools still leave the reader to reconcile identifiers, time zones, and product names. A better default
